Correction:  Laika & The Cosmonauts's album called Cosmopolis: 1988-2008 is not new, as I thought earlier today (while talking into a microphone, of course). The record's actually from 2008. It says so right on the cover. If I ever figure out why it's in CJAM's "currents" library, I'll let you know.

What a beautifully complicated story: Aurelio Martinez is a guitarist and traditional drummer in Honduras.  He plays Garifuna music. And here's where it gets complicated. The Garifuna is a distinct people (Carib/Arawak/African), language, and culture, originating from the island of St. Vincent and now located mainly along the Caribbean coast of Central America. They are descended from the original inhabitants of the Caribbean islands, the Arawaks and Caribs, who intermarried with escaped African slaves. I didn't know about this until I heard the record! To make it still more complicated, on the new album, Martinez blends Senegalese influences into his Garifuna sound.

The Snark's semi-impromptu feature on some Norwegian artists from the Smalltown Supersound label is entirely due to my friend Pat's record collection. Casiokids appear (yet again) mainly because they actually toured North America in 2010 and we got to see them LIVE! In Detroit! A memorable night.
Special thanks to Pat for the loan of many great CDs from Norway (among other places).
Why no Jaga Jazzist? (Ask not. No reason.)
Kokning inside cover art by Kim Hiorthøy, 2010.
Anonymous comment (see below) points out that Casiokids are touring the south and east of the United States right now, but Detroit is not on the list of destinations. We are used to having our musical hearts broken this way, but we still don't like it. There's a link in the comments that doesn't work. Use this one: http://www.myspace.com/casiokids instead.

"I'm Rich As Old Croesus When I've Got Ten Pieces"

Kokning cover art by Kim Hiorthey, 2010.
Cheers to Five Alarm Funk, the exceptional 10-piece funk band from Vancouver, British Columbia, currently touring Canada. They chewed up the Phog Lounge last Wednesday. People who couldn't get in were watching through the front window and grooving out in the cold and damp on the sidewalk. Inside was extremely funky, foggy, and fun.

"To Live My Life The Way I Want, To Sing And Do Whatever I Please"

Female musicians and singers are featured on this episode, which coincides with the 100th anniversary of International Women's Day! So we had some extremely good tunes today, with a special focus on Jamaica, the tiny island of great music, super sound systems, massive amounts of records, and the best singers and players.
Louise Bennett is one of the heroes of independent Jamaica, and this week she sings the mento classic Linstead Market.  Also see the video below from Marcia Griffiths, one of the I-Threes (the back-up singers for Bob Marley and Wailers). Ms. Griffiths sings us a song (that I don't remember hearing before) from the 80s-90s, but apparently Electric Boogie introduced the world to the dance called The Electric Slide. The video is incredibly charming and shows us how easily Jamaica and New York mesh together into total awesomeness. Enjoy!

I'm looking for more.

Good cover, eh?
Martin, my visiting co-host, was thwarted by a bad Wikipedia article during our broadcast. He's asked me to tell you about it.
There he was, conscientiously doing a web-search on the band A Hawk and A Hacksaw, who take their name from a famous quote about "a hawk and a handsaw." OK. We knew the hacksaw was supposed to be a handsaw, but were unable to recall from what literary work the phrase is lifted.
I assumed it was from Lewis Carroll, but I didn't mention this to Martin until we were leaving the CJAM studios. "It sounds like something the Mad Hatter would say, n'est-ce que pas?" Ah, the seed of doubt is planted. "Get me to a library!" he exclaimed.
Y'see, Martin had told everybody in radioland that the quote was from Don Quixote, another madman, yes, but not the right one. Turns out, it's from Hamlet (Act II, sc. ii).
Now, my poor co-host feels like an impostor, as though he should give back his English degree! Ha ha! For myself, I don't mind momentarily confusing four words and three great books... (but I don't have the same degree as him).
I'm also going to assume it was some well-meaning but misinformed Hawk-and-Hacksaw-fan who wrote up that Wiki-error. It couldn't be the band, right? They couldn't get the origin of their own name wrong! Oh boy...
Guildenstern: O, there has been much throwing about of brains.
