What a beautifully complicated story: Aurelio Martinez is a guitarist and traditional drummer in Honduras.  He plays Garifuna music. And here's where it gets complicated. The Garifuna is a distinct people (Carib/Arawak/African), language, and culture, originating from the island of St. Vincent and now located mainly along the Caribbean coast of Central America. They are descended from the original inhabitants of the Caribbean islands, the Arawaks and Caribs, who intermarried with escaped African slaves. I didn't know about this until I heard the record! To make it still more complicated, on the new album, Martinez blends Senegalese influences into his Garifuna sound.

  2. Anonymous beat me to it.
One of Snark's best shows regarding good and great new things that I've never heard of.

Its kind of misleading to read what you play before listening cuz there's so many unknowns, but the great ear of the snark (not to be confused with the eye of the tiger) does not disappoint!

  3. Here's to 2011!!

Beaten By Them-reminds me of American Analog Set and Yo La Tengo...I will seek this out...too bad about their name

    The Albertans-quite charming, no?

Aurelio-doesn't really fit into the traditional Central American mold...great stuff!

Hossam Ramzy & Phil Thornton-This is way way better than the cd cover implies

My Son The Hurricane-thanks for playing one without vocals
