"It's A Kind Of Scratching, Collapsing, Irritated, Dissatisfied Kind of Music..."

Back cover detail from People Get Ready For The Fabulous Chambers Brothers, 1966.
No dissatisfaction with this record. It's got the quality seal of approval.
Today's blog-post title is a quote from Green Gartside of Scritti Politti, taken from Totally Wired: Postpunk Interviews and Overviews by Simon Reynolds (US edition, Soft Skull Press, 2009). Gartside was asked about the song "Opec-Immac," which we heard today on The Snark, and that's what he had to say about it. Completely accurate description. No wonder it's the Summer of Scritti.

R.I.P. Jerry Leiber and thanks for the songs.

I generally try to avoid writing about the music I play, but I couldn't help it -- I did two posts about Leiber & Stoller after I read their book.

  1. Yea!!!! Back to my Snark habit!

  2. Thanks for the Skeletones Four and Asa....both charming in very different ways.

  3. ....oh....and....without the Snark I really wouldn't know about the wonder that is U-J3RK5!

  4. Welcome back, Mr. Herman.

Just drifting aimlessly along without your big ears to steer by...

You know Naum Gabo and U-J3RK5 Work For Police, right? Do you remember that the 5 is silent? Best Vancouver band ever.

  5. Best Vancouver Band? That's not saying much. For a city that size, really not a lot of great music...UJ3RK5, D.O.A., Twilight Circus....who am I forgetting...

  6. You are tough on the west coast Lotusland! I was just talkin' through my hat, but I do see your point.
Zonk says Subhumans. I could mention Five Alarm Funk.
I guess Vancouverians got better things to do than make great music... this is a very short list.
(And I don't like any DOA songs...)

  7. Doug's list of honourable mentions includes Pointed Sticks, Dishrags, and the Young Canadians, among others with whom I won't trouble you.

He's also long been crazy about a band called Cub.
